Countries around the world are striving towards solar power and other renewable energy sources. This comes at a critical point in human history, as climate change threatens to irreversibly damage the Earth.
Solar power
is one of the best sources of renewable energy, as it repurposes sunlight into a form that people can use. It’s clean, efficient, and found in abundance.
In fact, some of the world’s largest solar power plants can provide electricity to hundreds of thousands of homes, as seen below.
10. Solar Star — USA
Solar Star is one of the biggest solar power plants in the world. It’s located on a 13 square kilometer plot of land in the state of California. While it’s now reached the tenth spot on the list, Solar Star was the largest solar power plant when its construction finished in 2015.
Experts claim the American solar plant produces 579 megawatts of energy — enough to power over 200,000 homes.
9. Noor Complex — Morocco
The Noor Complex Solar Power Plant is built near the town of Ouarzazate in Morocco. It currently provides 510 megawatts of clean energy, but the renewable power plant is in the process of adding an extra 70 megawatts — bringing the total up to 580 megawatts.
Experts estimate that this is enough to provide energy to over a million Moroccans, drastically reducing the country’s carbon emissions.
8. Kamuthi Solar Power Station — India
India has made great strides towards providing its people with clean energy. One of its many accomplishments is the construction of the Kamuthi Solar Power Station in 2016.
This enormous powerplant covers 10 square kilometers and can produce 648 megawatts of energy. By comparison, the average Indian uses only 800 watts of energy, meaning the powerplant can supply electricity to over 800,000 people.
7. Enel Villanueva Plant — Mexico
The Enel Villanueva renewable power plant was completed in 2018, where it could produce 828 megawatts of energy. This power plant is the country’s largest solar farm, and it’s comprised of over two million solar panels.
This Mexican solar power plant is unique because of how it was made, as it made heavy use of automated machinery during its construction.
6. Longyangxia Solar Park — China
Longyangxia solar park is one of China’s many strides towards clean energy. The massive power plant spans 27 square kilometers in the Qinghai province, and it’s able to produce 850 megawatts of energy.
What makes the power plant unique is its close integration with a nearby dam and hydroelectric power plant. The interconnected nature allows both stations to be more efficient.
5. Kurnool Solar Park — India
Kurnool solar park is a 24 square kilometer station in the Andhra Pradesh state of India. This is one of the world’s largest solar power plants thanks to its 1,000-megawatt capacity and the four million solar panels installed.
Reports claim that on sunny days the power plant can provide enough energy for the entire district of Kurnool, providing electricity to all four million inhabitants.
4. Datong Solar Project — China
The Datong solar project was developed in the Shanxi province in 2016. The project consists of several smaller plants, each under 100 megawatts, which total 1,070 megawatts.
Because of the way it’s constructed, the project may have other solar plants added to it in the future — increasing its capacity and providing more clean energy.
3. Sweihan Power Project — UAE
The UAE has been dedicated to producing clean energy for a long time, and the construction of the Sweihan project in Abu Dhabi is a clear indication of this commitment.
The power plant’s construction began in 2017 and was completed two years later.
This solar farm has an incredible 1,177-megawatt capacity — enough to offset seven million tons of carbon emissions a year. What’s even more astounding is that the UAE was able to accomplish this on only 7.8 square kilometers of land. They did this with the help of innovative solar panel technology, like the monocrystalline photo-voltaic modules used.
2. Tengger Solar Park — China
The Tengger solar park is located in a desert of the same name. The park is called the “Great Wall of Solar” because it stretches across 1,200 kilometers of land.
This power plant is currently the largest on the planet at a 1,547-megawatt capacity — allowing it to provide clean energy to over 600,000 homes.
1. Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum Solar Park — UAE
The
Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum solar park
in Dubai is headed towards being the largest solar power plant in the world. It currently sits at a 1,013-megawatt capacity, but another 1,850 megawatts are currently being constructed — bringing its capacity to 2,863 megawatts.
The project started in 2012 and has steadily been increasing in size. Dubai’s leadership has claimed that they plan on adding to this already-massive solar park, so it becomes the world’s first 5,000-megawatt solar power plant.
This is the kind of commitment the world needs right now, as it will greatly offset the UAE’s carbon emissions and put it one step closer to carbon neutrality.
